What do you get when you combine a Korean restaurant with a cocktail bar, rock 'n' roll memorabilia and a classic NYC deli? You get the
Fillmore Backroom, an upper East Side restaurants. This brand new spot opened in early March, and has quickly become our new favorite NYC dining spot for Korean chicken, cocktails and deli sandwiches. They're bringing a whole new meaning to 'food fusion' because they have something for everyone from crispy Korean fried chicken, classic chopped cheese deli sandwiches and some of the best soju and sake cocktails in the city. Come with us as we review this quirky new spot on the Upper East Side.
The first thing you'll notice on the Fillmore Backroom menu is that the Fillmore Backroom offers a diverse range of different types of foods. Our waiter was very helpful and was quick to help make some recommendations about the dishes we should try. There were two in particular that were an absolute must and these were their signature Korean Fried Chicken and their famous Chopped Cheese Hoagie.
The first thing to arrive to the table was the plate of Korean Fried Chicken. Fillmore Backroom offered a few different sauce options but we opted for their Soy Garlic Sauce which was garlicly, slightly sweet and with a hint of spice and heat. The exterior of the chicken was crispy and had an almost glass like finish, it had a nice crunch to it. The chef nailed the seasoning of the chicken as well, it was perfectly seasoned throughout from the skin through to the bone and each bite was juicy and moist. As far as Korean Fried Chicken goes, this was definitely some of the best I've had in quite a while.
Following on from the from the Korean fried chicken, we tried their Chopped Cheese Hoagie, and let me say, it did not disappoint. Now, for those unfamiliar with the in's and out's of New York City bodega cuisine, allow me to introduce you to the concept of a Chopped Cheese: essentially, it's akin to a chopped-up cheeseburger, think of it as NYC's take on the iconic Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich.
When I asked them about how they made their Chopped Cheese taste so good, they simply said that it's all about using high-quality ingredients, and I would absolutely agree. Each element of this sandwich shines. From the fresh, toasted bread to the crisp lettuce and tomatoes, every component plays its part. However, the true star of the show is the chopped beef itself. Rich, perfectly seasoned, and boasting a delightful crispy texture, it melds seamlessly with the melted American cheese.
We dove headfirst into Fillmore Backroom's "secret menu" of cocktails, starting our adventure with the mysterious Soju Disco Cocktail. This drink was a wild ride! Boozy, fruity, and served with a flashing disco ice cube that turned our glasses into a mini dance party. It was a showstopper, catching the eye of everyone who walked in. You couldn't help but think, I've gotta get me one of those disco cocktails!
Next up, we tried their take on the Soju Sour. It was like a whisky sour's cooler, citrusy cousin. Tangy and refreshing, with a frothy egg white foam on top for that extra oomph. Personally, I've got a bit of a sweet tooth, so I could've gone for a touch more sweetness, but hey, it was still a darn good drink!
And then, it was time for the Soju Bombs. If you've never experienced one of these bad boys, let me tell ya, you're missing out! It's a simple concept: drop a shot of soju into a glass of beer and down it all in one go. Instant party starter!
High top seating in the front provided the perfect vantage point for people-watching and savoring your favorite drink. But as you venture towards the back of the restaurant and walk up the stairs, you'll find yourself transported into the Fillmore Backroom, a dimly lit section hidden away and adorned with rock and roll memorabilia.
The decor in the backroom pays homage to the Fillmore East, a legendary Rock 'n' Roll venue on the Lower East Side. The walls are covered with everything from vinyl records and vintage recording studio equipment which creates a nostalgic and unique ambiance. Whether you're a music aficionado or simply seeking a unique dining experience, the Fillmore Backroom offers a delightful fusion of atmosphere, history, and hospitality.
The Fillmore Backroom was very good value for money, particularly when you consider the quality of the food, the location and the service. You can tell they pride themselves on offering a wholesome and well rounded experience for their guests. Overall it was around $60pp including tax and tip. This included three large entrees, and three rounds of drinks. Absolutely worth the money, and we'll definitely be returning.
